Rev. Awit Marcelino is a second-generation Filipino-Canadian from Winnipeg, Manitoba and a third-generation Disciple. She has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Manitoba and a Master of Divinity from Emmanuel College (University of Toronto). In 2022, she was ordained in her home congregation of Broadway Disciples United Church in Winnipeg.
At Emmanuel College, Awit delved into Indigenous spiritualities, intersectional feminist theologies, and intertwined texts (Jewish, Christian, and Muslim scriptures). She also completed her Contextual Education placement at the Multi-Faith Centre at the University of Toronto to collaborate with students and chaplains from diverse faith traditions and to lead and participate in programming for people of colour and queer folks.
In the wider church, she has served as the secretary of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Canada board; the Canadian representative on the Disciples Women Leadership Council; the Disciples representative on the Women’s Inter-Church Council of Canada; and as the Canadian representative on the International Committee of the Fellowship of the Least Coin.
In addition to serving as the minister at STCC, Awit provides pulpit supply in person and online to several Disciples congregations. She also co-leads Open Table, an inclusive monthly Bible study and dinner church for young adults, hosted at Hillcrest Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Toronto. She is the treasurer for the College of Churches of Christ in Canada. She is also the facilitator of National Benevolent Association’s Peer Learning and Wellness Group for Asian & Pacific Islander Young Adults.
